Origin/History
Second most-planted variety in Italy (the first being Sangiovese) Believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato in central Piedmont. While Barbera is most important in northwest Italy, the New World has embraced the grape for its high acidity which tends to impart “freshness” in blended wines.

Wine
Often used in blending to give softness to overly tannic wines and structure to lighter wines. Barbera-based wines tend to show best when young with bright fruit, good acidity and smooth tannins.
