Believed to have originated in Greece and then been brought into Italy by early settlers. Considered Italy's "noble grape of the south".

Wine
Typically high in tannin and acidity. Full bodied and normally better when aged.

Plant:
Vigorous, but lower productivity than average. Good general and basal fertility. Versatile in hottest climates. Small clusters, moderately compact. Medium-small berries, dark blue. Tolerant of botrytis and mildew.

Wine:
Ruby red; floral aroma, delicate and persistent; good alcohol and acid, well structured. Adapted for long aging. Comes from Campania, where Mastroberardino has been at the forefront of creating its reputation as Taurasi.
